#1108: The Pocket Plow

Feb 19, 2011
This week on Car Talk, Leanne is tired of shelling out 50 bucks per blizzard to escape her driveway, so she's trying to design a mini-snowplow for her Subaru. Leanne's husband thinks she's nuts, but Tom and Ray think she just might be the late-night infomercial's new best friend. Also, Jon's Toyota makes an explosive return from the Philippines; a new alternator puts an unexpected spark into Allison's marriage; and, Tommy embraces the Dark Side. All this, plus some creative personal ads from across the pond ("Shy, ugly man, fond of extended periods of self-pity seeks the impossible.") and lots more, this week, on Car Talk.

Show Open Topic

Tom and Ray share some creative, witty and highly amusing British personal ads.

This Week's Puzzler

Ray's sharing an epic puzzler involving fine English cuisine, and a murder at a grant English estate.

Last Week's Puzzler

Three different numbers are chosen at random, and one is written on each of three slips of paper. The slips are then placed face down on the table. You have to choose the slip with the largest number. How can you improve your odds?

Monty Hall Redux

The puzzler answer about flipping over papers to get the largest number is a version of the Monty Hall problem or advice. Always switch after the first door because it reduces the odds from 1 in 3 to 1 in 2.

Love the show!

I love the show! I have a song about an unfortunate automobile. It'd be great if you could play it! http://soundcloud.com/acousticalhearken/the-parking-lot
