#1111: The Lexus ATM

Mar 12, 2011
This week on Car Talk, Eric in Arizona is finding 100 dollar bills under the seats in his recently purchased '06 Lexus. Is it a unique rebate program? Evidence of nefarious doings by the previous owner? Meanwhile, Lori in New York City went to a TV show taping and left as the reluctant owner of a brand new GMC Denali. Is there a hassle-free way she can get rid of it, aside from handing the keys to Tom and Ray? Also, Ellie survived Chicago's Lake Shore Drive blizzard shutdown, but her Ford Escape may not have been so lucky; Robin in Arkansas learned the hard way that her dog and her husband's Chevy are not a good match; and are duct tape and a drill the best options to fix a leaky Civic? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Show Open Topic

Tom and Ray share some news from Gallup polling: mechanics are rising when it comes to being trusted. Is your guy one of the not-so-good ones? Here's how to find out.

This Week's Puzzler

What makes Ray's list of nine states different from all the others?

Last Week's Puzzler

On his vacation, Bill saw something that is spelled with all five vowels, and seven letters total. His friend saw something different on his vacation -- but it was the same word. What's the word?

Missed opportunity

The woman caller who went through two sets of brakes per year. You blew this opportunity. Even if she drove like Don Gartlitts between lights, she couldn't wear out so many pads. Instead, you should have asked her which foot she brakes with (my diagnosis is that she drives with her left foot on the brake). You could have helped to stop that annoying practice by pointing out to her that she should brake with her RIGHT foot and keep her LEFT foot off that pedal altogether, thereby re-training some of those jerks who do the same thing and may be listening. I am quite surprised that you didn't arrive at the same diagnosis. Otherwise you guys are great!
