#1152: Chinese Food Delivery

Dec 24, 2011
This week on Car Talk, Santa comes through big-time for Tom and Ray in their never ending quest to escape difficult callers. They're now the proud owners of the Get Off the Phone Excuse Machine, and it's likely to get an early test, thanks to Nancy and the Tupperware-like noise coming from her Volvo. Elsewhere, desperate times call for wacko measures, as Jamie considers plugging a cracked head with oatmeal; Mark ponders giving his Suburban a full drive-train transplant into a new body; and Julie goes shopping for any car that can survive her husband's aversion to the emergency brake. And, Jan "The Waver" responds to her husband's concerns about her overly friendly driving style. All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Show Open Topic

The gift that keeps on giving--as in, giving Tom and Ray an escape hatch.

This Week's Puzzler

How can Tommy have six coins-- but hardly make any change?

Last Week's Puzzler

Fashion aside, why did aviator Friedrich Schringenrudder dress in a stylish, long, silk scarf before taking to the air?

Pigmobile

For the new Pigmobile, may I suggest a Subaru Baja? http://www.totalcarmania.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Subaru-Baja-2.jpg

Parking Mat

Congratulations on your purchase of a new car. I was going to suggest one of these items. http://www.amazon.com/MAXSA-Parking-Right%C2%AE-Model-37358/dp/B000F6DNMQ I bought one so that I could pull far enough forward so that I could close the garage door, but not so far forward that I bang into the tool bench. It has a thoughtfully placed lump which would have been handy in preventing your car from rolling backward. Perhaps you'll still find some use for it.

I'm the absent minded professor ...

Yes, that was my wife Julie calling in to make fun of my destroying the car. She was terrific, as was the whole show. As a result, we drive a nice, safe, automatic transmission equipped 2006 Subaru Outback wagon.
