#1221: The Steve Revolution

May 26, 2012
This week on Car Talk, could one honest man de-sleazify the entire used car industry? Probably not, but that won't stop Tom and Ray from trying to convince Steve that it'd be a good idea to fix or disclose his CRV's tendency to take on water before trading it in. This week's other probing auto-behavioral question comes from Dan in New Hampshire: Do people who keep their cars longer, stay married longer? On the technical front, Anna's Volvo will only start when it's facing downhill; Michelle's gas pedal doesn't like to move first thing in the morning; and, on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Raymond in Utah really had a chicken bone stuck in his fan. Finally, how should Sam handle his newly retired Dad, who's keeping himself busy be destroying Mom's Beetle? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Pollen girl

Usually you don't miss the obvious, but . . . 1. Asking if she parked outside, especially under a tree would have confirmed your "diagnosis" 2. Taping the foot of a nylon (or some such) over one of the AC vents would have allowed her to see what was coming into the car. 3. If pollen, a solution: get a soft car brush to remove the pollen from the area under the windshield each morning and/or drive the first few minutes with the windows open while the AC is on so all the pollen can be blown out of the car.

How Come?

Why doesn't Car Talk say upfront that the show is a rebroadcast? "The Splendid Table" does it nicely. That way I don't spend the entire hour thinking to myself, "I swear I've heard this show before" instead of just enjoying the rebroadcast. Also, why the increase in repeats?
