#1226: Who Drowned My Corolla

Jun 30, 2012
This week on Car Talk, Maria's car was minding its own business in her boyfriend's driveway, until his ex-wife came along and gave it a tap, which sent it rolling straight on down to the Connecticut River. Was the ex's tap more of a shove, or is Maria's boyfriend guilty of leaving it in "ready to roll" position? Elsewhere, Debra's truck is making a mysterious knocking sound; Matt's wife won't go near their new car after a mouse spotting; and Sara's got the DIY bug, and wants to tackle a transmission rebuild. Also, on Stump the Chumps, did Tom and Ray help dog-trainer Vicky choose the right pet-mobile? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Puzzler answer for show 1226

Your answer to the puzzle about the burnt match in the coffee was wrong. Here's why: no one sips coffee without FIRST putting in sugar or cream or whatever. The coffee drinker presumably put sugar in the drink, but then balked at drinking it because a match was floating in it. When the hostess returned with a "fresh" cup of coffee, the coffee drinker would--presumably--again put in sugar before drinking it. He would NOT taste it before adding sugar. No one does that. Therefore, he could not possibly know that the hostess was returning the "old" coffee. I am your new puzzler winner. Send me a gift certificate.

If this is a Mensa puzzler then I must conclude that the Mensa folks lack common sense.
