#1445: Tommy, Riposa in Pace

Nov 08, 2014
This week on Car Talk, we pay tribute to our beloved brother, friend, and co-host, Tom Magliozzi, who passed away Monday, November 3rd. You’ll hear many of our favorite moments featuring Tom the consummate radio professional, Tom the philosopher king, Tom the storyteller, and ultimately Tom, the guy who enjoyed nothing more than to sit with his brother and all of you listeners for an hour a week, laughing his butt off. This special edition of the show will be hosted by Ray. We’ll be listening, and we hope you will, too.

Show Open Topic

A special memorial tribute to Tom Magliozzi, who passed away this week.

Car Talk for Marathon training

Last year, I decided to run a marathon, so months before that I had to start training. I needed something to numb my mind (just kidding) during those long grueling hours of running. I turned to Car Talk Podcasts. So - Even though marathon runners feel like turning around and going back to the starting line, this is NPR.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. Bad moods turned to good so many times. I can't remember feeling so much for the passing of someone I never met. Thank you Tom and Ray!

Seems too short

Not sure how many times I've listened to this last show featuring Tom's "greatest" moments. At least the first three times, the show only seemed to have taken 10 minutes. Don't know if I fell asleep or the matter of laughing threw tears distorted the time.

Wanted to say this, and thank you.

I'm only 20, and I literally grew up listening to these guys. I kept me smiling and happy through the good and bad of my whole life, I want to seriously say thank you from the bottom my heart. I'm very, very sad to see Tommy go, but I will *ALWAYS*, remember and respect him as long as I live.

To Ray & Family, so sorry for your loss. When I first read the title of this podcast I thought it was another one of your cheeky "rollicking" pranks! Thought you should know Tommy's ability to bring out smiles and laughs extended to the Antipodes.

Tom, you live on in my laughs and smiles

Tom's laugh and humor could take me from being in a terrible mood to a great mood. This show was a perfect example of highlights from shows that he made me--and everyone else that listened to him--forget their troubles and laugh and smile. A great, great tribute, Ray- you nailed it. I will listen to this show many, many times in the coming years. And in that way, Tommy lives on.

I have a weakness for two segments- the credit card incident in Miami, and his army stories... I will laugh every single time I ever hear them.

Thank you. Ray, you and Tommy have been like the nutty uncles that I heard from on a weekly basis for most of the last 30 years. Tips on life, relationships, work and even, occasionally, cars. I can't believe how many perfectly good hours I've wasted during that span of time. And I wouldn't give a single one of them back. I miss you uncle Tommy and God bless you and your family uncle Ray.

Ray, After a 25 year marriage, I divorced and moved to Laredo, TX alone. I have since remarried, but the first 2 years alone were rough. Your show and your brother's amazing wit kept me in check every morning on my walks. I laugh so hard I cry sometimes listening to your show. His laugh was infectious and I will join your thousands of fans in offering my sympathies to you and your family.

Even the Highway Patrol misses Tom

I was listening to Ray's tribute to Tom on my Sunday drive when I was overcome with the loss and found myself driving the highway in tears. Like any safe motorist who can't get a handle on their emotions, I pulled over to the shoulder, waiting to get a grip. The next thing I knew, a California Highway Patrol officer pulled up behind me and walked up to my window. He asked me to remove my sunglasses and when he saw my tears, he asked why I was crying. I told him and he reached in through my window, put his hand on my shoulder and said, gently, "I share your loss mam." After he drove away, I composed myself, got back on the road and found myself laughing again before the show was over. Thank you Ray, Thank you Tommy. Love, Amber

I've listened to Car Talk for many years. Especially with my father and occasionally even my mother and sister. From very young in grade school to high school to college to work. And Tom and Ray have never failed to make me smile regardless of how good or bad I was feeling on any given day. Very sorry to hear the news about Tom; I grew up listening to these guys and it feels like one of the constants in my life has been changed irrevocably. Obviously I didn't know him beyond this radio show but given how cheerful, likeable, and hilarious he (and Ray, of course!) was, I think with him gone the world is a bit less brighter now. If there is a reason to laugh when your heart is breaking this lovingly curated show would be it. I found my way here hoping to catch a segment or two that might stir up memories of afternoons sitting in cars long after we'd reached our destination. When sitting too long seemed the only logical thing to do. We'd wait. We'd listen. And laugh. Knowingly late to wherever it was we were supposed to be. Somehow being just where we needed to be. Thank you for this laughter filled tribute. That laugh. Those moments. They are yours, thank you for sharing them with us and for making them ours too.

It was the best thing ever

Reading the comments I find that there were many others along with me who were helped during the hard times by these guys. There were many a days when these guys lifted me out of total despair. Oh the anticipation when the banjo starts playing and you feel that for the next one hour you'll be alright. I find it very strange that the US spend billions of dollars and sacred lives of its soldiers on wars. How come we don't use our best tools to solve our problems? We should have sent Tom and Ray over to talk to Talibans, ISIS, and who ever else. I am sure that these guys would have won those guys over and showed them what life is really about. I guess now all that we can do is air drop some CDs with Ray's laughter.

Thank you Tom and Ray for the great show! I for one would love to have had him as our philosopher king. I listened for the comedy, as I posted in the forums, My dad came to the US as a student from India way back in the 70s. He still has his old Cutlass Supreme, and that car along with the Toyota Camry that's as old as me (25 years!), has meant we've had a lot of trips to "our" mechanic [Raymond Miller] and loved listening to Car Talk. Once we got a "new" 2003 Camry, my mom and I used to joke that we had one and a half cars because the two old ones were always rotating at the mechanic's shop.

RIP Tommy, and the new click and clack?

Dear Ray, my deepest condolences to your great family. When you can think about this, for the sake of your legacy, PLEASE consider helping NPR find the next generation of click and clack. Your show pulled me through some of the hardest moments of my life with your humor, vast knowledge, and irreverence, seriously. I thought maybe some of your kids might be interested? I miss you and Tommy both. God bless you, Claudia
