The compact luxury segments are hot and the new Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class really sets the standard for them this year. This second-generation further inculcates the GLC as the go-to for luxury and style.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class sets the bar for the compact luxury crossover market. It’s the height of luxury, versatility, and comfort. It’s a very well-done entry, especially with the added thrill of the AMG model that comes for 2024.
The 2024 GLC 300 is the base model for the GLC-Class and sets a high expectation for the marque. Technology, sportiness, and a refined way of combining luxury with well-tuned motoring showcases how much Mercedes has learned in perfecting automotive offerings with German style.
The greatest weak point for the GLC is its price tag. It’s a bit more expensive, at base level, than most competitors. Once all of the convenience items you’ll want are added, you’ll likely be spending more for this SUV. But it may be worth it given the high amounts of luxury and posh sensibility the GLC-Class offers.
We still consider the 2024 GLC 300 to be a top choice in small luxury crossovers, but cross-shopping a couple of competitors may be worth the extra work before making a buying decision.
Car Talk researchers have tested this vehicle and decided to award it a 8.3 out of 10 based on our years of expertise and stringent criteria.

When the new-generation GLC 300 debuted in 2023, it set a new standard for the compact luxury crossover segment. It only lacked a performance model to compete fully with the others in that market. Now comes the AMG model 43 to do that. Soon, we expect, hybrid models will also be forthcoming.
The X3 is a generalist in a field of luxurious specialists. Compared to the GLC, the X3 is a bit smaller inside and a lot less luxurious in feel. We feel that the GLC is a far better option when compared side by side.
The Genesis GV70 might be the GLC 300’s fiercest competitor. It’s a well-done luxury sport utility all around with features that match the GLC closely in sophistication and appeal. The Mercedes, however, has a more robust infotainment system and a stronger performance option when compared.
Equal to the Mercedes-Benz GLC in luxury feel is the Volvo XC60. The Volvo is also slightly roomier, especially in the cargo area. But the Swedes just don’t quite have the same kind of road appeal that Mercedes can deliver. Especially in the standard GLC 300 when compared to any of the options for the XC60.
Add about $2,000 to the base price for the GLC 300 to get the all-wheel drive model and another $3,000 for the add-on packages you’re likely to want for convenience and comfort.
The table below shows the most common trim levels and how much they will run you.
This second-generation GLC-Class was introduced in 2023. This year, not much changes, though a new AMG 43 model is introduced.
The AMG GLC 43 is a souped-up version of the GLC that adds a lot of horsepower and many sport-tuned elements and accouterments to the SUV. For performance-hungry drivers, this is where it’s at. Most of the goodies associated with the AMG moniker are included.
There are two powertrain options for the GLC-Class currently. The GLC 300 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive (Mercedes calls this “4Matic”) is an option on all GLC models.
This base engine has a mild hybrid setup that aids in efficiency and in lowering the lag time between the pedal press and the turbocharger kicking in. This makes the GLC 300 one of the smoothest crossover-SUVs we’ve driven. It has a nice, easy quality about it that is a nice change from the timorous turbos found in many other vehicles.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class handles nicely as well. It’s tight, but not jumpy and does a good job of maneuvering on twisty roads and in tight parking lots. It’s not a sedan, of course, but it’s definitely better than most sport utility vehicles.
Upgrading to the new AMG GLC 43 boosts engine output to 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. AWD is standard in the AMG model. It’s an expensive proposition to get into this performance model, but many might find it worth it given the fast pace and seat-shifting acceleration.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is giving the GLC 300 a five out of five star rating. Like most sport utilities, it ranked only four of five in rollover tests. Consumers should also be aware that there are several recalls associated with the GLC-Class this year, most of which should have been handled before purchase.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the 2024 GLC 300 its best safety rating of “Top Safety Pick+”. This means that the GLC received top scores of “Good” on all crash testing and advanced safety systems testing. Plus it certifies that its headlights won’t give suntans to passing motorists.
Finding reliability information for the GLC-Class is difficult, since it’s so new. Most initial reliability scores and scores from the 2023 model year when it was introduced show its dependability expectations to be about average for the market. And slightly above average for its luxury segment.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is a stand-alone trim level with a lot of standard equipment included. For those living in climates with difficult weather, we’d suggest adding the all-wheel drive option and the Winter package. Adaptive cruise control is a standalone option we’d also suggest adding, though the much more expensive (and additive) Driver Assistance package adds even more convenience technologies. These are all good upgrade options, depending on your needs.
The warranty on a new Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is just above average for the segment. As with most competitors, corrosion protection is included in the basic warranty. As is roadside assistance.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class was introduced in 2023, so used models of this generation aren’t going to be common. The previous-generation captured good reviews, so it might be worth considering.
