If you’re considering donating a car in Detroit, then we’ve got you covered. It’s fairly quick, simple and pain free to donate your car, and if you’re an NPR listener - we can help you get those proceeds sent right to WDET and the programming you love.
How do I donate my car?
Regardless of who you donate to, this part is simple. If you’re donating with Car Talk VDP and are supporting your local NPR station, you can fill out the online donation form and a towing agent will contact you within 1-3 business days to schedule a contact free car pick up (with no cost to you!). When your beloved vehicle (oh yes, you can donate anything from planes to jet skis - not just cars!) is picked up, you’ll hand over the keys and signed title to the tow driver. That’s it, that’s all. We can obviously help you if you’ve lost your title or aren’t sure what to do next.
Will I receive a tax donation?
Of course! After your car has sold, we’ll email you a tax receipt. If your vehicle sells for more than $500 and you want to claim the full amount when itemizing taxes, an IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes will be sent in the mail to you. This will be your tax receipt for your charitable contribution.
Can I donate a car that is a bit of a clunker or doesn’t run?
Certainly. When you donate your car, the charity will dispose of it in the best possible way to maximize its value. Sometimes that means it will get broken down for parts, or other times it’ll go off to a whole new life. Don’t worry about that part - sometimes you’d be surprised at exactly where your car heads to next.
Which areas are covered in Detroit?
All of them! It doesn’t matter where you are (in fact, we’ll pick up from anywhere in Michigan), your car can be collected. Super simple and pain free. We’ll even make sure that the time suits you, too.
What happens to a car after it’s been donated?
Once you’ve donated your car, we will arrange for a tow driver to come and collect it. Depending on the model and condition of the car, it will either be sold directly to an auto recycler or sold at auction. Our goal is to get the highest price possible and make sure we can donate as much money as possible to public radio.
