Summary

The design of the Ioniq 6 is very Porsche-like. That might be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on whether you like Porsches. We like it.

The Good
  • Great real-world range
  • Excellent interior
  • Lots of standard features
The Bad
  • Rear seats tight
  • Low rear visibility
The New
  • No changes for 2024
  • Introduced 2023

Verdict - Is the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 a Good Electric Sedan?

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a bit of a funambulist, tightrope walking that thin line between sporty and comfortable. It’s quick, comfortable, and high in value when compared to the other options it competes with. It’s our favorite electric sedan so far.

The 2024 Ioniq 6 is a very drivable daily vehicle with a lot of real-world range and fast charging capability. It’s aerodynamic and efficient, of course, but the rear hybrid hatch-trunk adds a lot of versatility as well.

The rear seat is great for anyone under six feet in height, but sitting three across in a car this small is a tight squeeze. Child safety seats do well, however, and the front seats are a good balance of bolster and comfort.

Quick acceleration, easy maneuverability, comfortable driving, and lots of amenities and style are what make this Hyundai great.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 vs. The Competition

The Ioniq 6 is a rare bird in that it’s both a sedan and fully electric. There are few competitors for it and the ones it does rival are close seconds.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 vs BMW i4

The BMW i4 is a sports sedan that emphasizes the sport part over the comfort. It’s a great option for those wanting a traditional-feeling Bimmer that happens to be an electric car. Comparatively, however, the Ioniq 6 is more well-healed and a more comfortable vehicle.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 vs Tesla Model 3

The best-selling Tesla Model 3 is a strong rival, but it’s beginning to show some chipped paint. For the price, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is better for those looking for a car and not an iPhone with wheels.

How Much Does a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Cost?

The 2024 Ioniq 6 starts at about $39,000, but most buyers are likely to be in the $45,000 or higher range after added options and delivery.

The table below shows the most common trim levels and how much they will run you.

What's New for the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in 2024?

The Ioniq 6 was introduced for the 2023 model year and carries over unchanged into 2024.

Performance - How Does the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Drive?

Like most electric vehicles, the Ioniq 6 is quick. Especially in its all-wheel drive model. It delivers 149 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque directly to the wheels. No transmission means no shifting which means quicker acceleration.

The 2024 Ioniq 6 has a 53 kWh battery pack as standard for the rear-wheel drive model. A 77.4 kWh battery pack is found in the AWD models. Both have an EPA-estimated range of about 240 miles per charge. Our real-world driving of the AWD with the 77.4 pack returned about 220 miles in a charge. That’s better than most EVs we’ve driven in terms of real-world versus estimates.

Charging is also fast, with the Ioniq 6 being capable of a full 350 kW of charge speed–about the maximum at most level 2 public fast chargers. We were able to charge the car from about 14 percent battery to over 80 percent in about 25 minutes. We’ve driven very few EVs that can boast that kind of charge speed.

Like most electric cars, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a joy to drive with instant acceleration, a low center of gravity, and a rear-wheel drive bias. It’s intuitive, fun, and engaging.

Safety - How Safe is the Hyundai Ioniq 6?

So far, no crash test results from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have been published for the Ioniq 6. A handful of recalls have been issued, however, mostly for minor things with the exception of one for a loose differential bolt in a small number of vehicles.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Hyundai Ioniq 6 its top award of Top Safety Pick Plus. This means that the Ioniq 6 aced all of the IIHS’ crash tests and advanced safety systems analysis.

Reliability & Quality - Is the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Reliable?

There is little reliability information to go with for the new Hyundai Ioniq 6. Hyundai has a good reputation for reliability and its long warranties make us inclined to believe that the Ioniq 6 will be above average in reliability.

Features - What Hyundai Ioniq 6 Options Are Worth It?

We recommend that buyers skip the base model SE Standard Range and the SE models in favor of the mid-range SEL with its bigger battery and access to all-wheel drive. The added traction and quicker acceleration are worth the cost.

The SEL also adds more conveniences and improved driver aids in technology that are worth having. Including a very well done adaptive cruise control with machine learning that learns driving habits over time to make cruise control more personalized and even less stressful.

Warranty - What is the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Warranty?

Hyundai has one of the best warranties in the industry. Most of their vehicles, including the Ioniq 6, have a 10 year powertrain warranty. For the Ioniq 6, that includes the battery and other electric vehicle components. What’s more, warranties on Hyundai vehicles are with the vehicle instead of the owner, allowing them to be transferred to used model buyers.

  • Basic: 5 years / 60k miles
  • PowerTrain: 10 years / 100k miles
  • Roadside Assistance: 5 years / Unlimited miles
  • Battery: 10 years / 100k miles
  • If buying used look at our best extended warranties

New or Used - Is Hyundai Ioniq 6 Worth Buying Used?

There are few (if any) used Ioniq 6 models on the market. Being such a new vehicle means that the options for used buys are nearly nonexistent.
