Lexus Maintenance: Cost, Repairs and Schedule

Lexus has one of the most positive and respected reputations when it comes to quality and reliability, as the automaker’s vehicles are known to stand the test of time. Still, some Lexus owners might want a little more peace of mind as their vehicle ages, and even the best Lexus models can have problems as time goes by and the miles add up.

Lexus Cost and Maintenance

Believe it or not, Lexus models do experience problems sometimes, especially as they get older. The good news is that the average repair costs are lower for the Japanese luxury brand than many of their competitors. Most estimates of the average annual repair costs come in between $500 and $600, and the number climbs to the higher end of the spectrum several years into ownership. Though close to Toyota’s annual averages, Lexus maintenance labor costs can be more expensive per hour.

Though repairs aren’t outrageously expensive, Lexus offers extended maintenance plans called Lexus Service Agreements. Available in three tiers, the agreements cover powertrain repairs, and some offer more comprehensive coverage with add-ons like roadside assistance. Owners have up to a $100 deductible as part of the plan, though that can be waived if the vehicle is repaired at the dealership that sold the coverage.

Lexus Offerings - What is Included

From the factory, Lexus issues two warranties: basic coverage for four years or 50,000 miles and powertrain coverage for six years or 70,000 miles. Beyond that, the vehicle service agreements add coverage in three tiers. The basic powertrain coverage includes the engine, transmission, and drive systems. It includes roadside assistance. The Extra Care Gold plan covers powertrain issues and adds coverage for several other vehicle components. The top Platinum coverage is only available for the RZ 450e EV.

Lexus Offerings - What is Not Included

Like most warranties, the Lexus vehicle service agreement doesn’t cover damage caused by abuse or neglect. It also doesn’t cover modified or aftermarket components. It’s not an insurance plan and won’t cover collision or other damage, and you could be on the hook for damage caused by theft or natural disasters.

Should I Buy a Lexus Maintenance Plan?

Lexus is widely considered to be one of the most reliable car brands, but unexpected things can and do happen. While you may not need a maintenance plan often, it can save thousands when the need arises. A maintenance plan can also provide you with peace of mind that you wouldn’t otherwise have - a significant benefit for some.

How Much Does a Lexus Maintenance Plan Cost?

Lexus doesn’t advertise the cost of its maintenance plans, but some owners report paying up to $5,000 on five years of maintenance. Many estimates peg the average annual repair costs at up to $600, so it would take far more than five years to break even.

Common Lexus Problems and Repairs

Many Lexus problems stem from cosmetic issues and problems with fluid leaks. Of course, most of the problems occur with older models as plastic and rubber components age and crack. It’s worth noting that Lexus problems, while not limited to cheap fixes, tend to be less serious than other vehicle makes.

Is a Lexus Extended Warranty Worth It?

If you plan on keeping your Lexus for several years and drive it heavily, an extended warranty can be worth the cost. It’s important to evaluate how and how much you drive to determine if the extra financial outlay up front is worth the cost.

Our Recommendations

Your Lexus will keep on ticking for years if you stay on top of routine maintenance. That means oil changes, air filter replacements, regular tire rotations, and keeping up with cleaning and care. Being diligent with the little stuff means you’ll be more on top of things and can catch problems before they escalate.
