RAY: We all know that pirates -- in fact many sailors of old -- had patches over one of their eyes. The question is, why did old-time sailors frequently have no eyesight in one eye and wear a patch over it?
Answer:
RAY: Before there was inertial navigation and all that geo-positional satellites and all that, sailors of old used to navigate by the stars. Except during the daytime, there ain't no stinking stars.
TOM: I noticed that too.
RAY: So they used to use the sun. Because they were looking at the sun and getting angles of elevation with a sextant, they would burn out their retinas. So who’s our winner?
