Traction control is an option that keeps your wheels from spinning if you accelerate hard under slippery conditions. Is it as good as all-wheel drive? No, nothing else is. But it’s certainly helpful. How does it work? Traction control uses the anti-lock brake sensors at the wheels to determine if a wheel is slipping. If it detects that one wheel is going faster than the others and has lost traction, it applies the brakes to that wheel until it regains traction.
Traction control and all-wheel drive are not mutually exclusive. In fact, many all-wheel cars also have the added bonus of traction control.
