Two Fathers, Two Sons

Apr 11, 2023

An automotive puzzler for you all now. A short one.

Here it is. Two fathers and two sons are embarking on an automotive trip. And it is a long trip too. Roughly 20 hours of driving is needed for this trip.

So, because the trip is so long, they agreed to drive in 5 hour shifts, to break it up a bit. So one person will drive for 5 hours, and the other and then the other. You get the idea.

When they arrive at their destination, they were greeted by some friends. And one of them said, "How was the trip?"

And the guy who did the final leg of the driving said, "Well, it was pretty good, I guess. But I ended up driving for almost 10 hours..."

However, everyone who agreed to drive took their shift and fulfilled their part of the bargain. So, why did this guy end up driving 10 hours?

Hint, they were all licensed drivers. So how did this happen?

Good luck.

Answer:

Okay, time for an answer to this sort-of automotive puzzler. A short one, very elegent and simple.

Two fathers and two sons are embarking on an automotive trip. They say they will split up the driving, they will each drive 5 hours of a 20 hour trip.

They all take turns and drive 5 hour shifts. But after 20 hours, they get to their destination and the guy who did the last let of the trip ends up driving 10 hours.

How is this possible?? If everyone did their agreed upon amount of driving, which they did, how did the one guy end up driving 10 hours?

And the answer is this.

It is very simply, that the two fathers and two sons are only three people. A father, his father and his son. So a grandfather, a father and a son.

Trick question, this one. The two fathers and two sons are only three people. So, one person ends up doing two 5 hour legs of the trip. Meaning that one person drivers 10 hours.

Tricky one...
