The Lexus TX is a brand new model offering from Toyota’s luxury brand. It fits a much-needed profile in the market, but we’re not terribly excited about its hybrid models and recommend its base model TX 350 instead.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 is a brand new model offering from Lexus. Based on the Toyota Grand Highlander that appeared last year, the TX is a larger three-row crossover-style sport utility. The TX is designed to be roomy, comfortable, and efficient. And luxurious, of course.
The TX is a natural addition to the Lexus lineup and one that has been a long time coming. While the brand has offered three-row options before, they were all truck-based SUVs. Finally recognizing a proficuous slot in their lineup, Lexus added the TX to fill a long-empty gap. And they did it very well.
There are few direct competitors for the new Lexus TX, though some of the mainstays from domestic brands like Ford, General Motors, and Jeep have been slowly morphing into more car-like vehicles.
The 2024 Lexus TX brings something unique that is largely unmatched in the three-row, luxury SUV segment. And unlike many vehicles in the luxury markets, it’s one of the few where we recommend the base model over the rest of the lineup.
Car Talk researchers have tested this vehicle and decided to award it a 7.7 out of 10 based on our years of expertise and stringent criteria.

The Lexus TX joins two other three-row options in the Lexus lineup, but is a crossover-style SUV rather than a truck-based utility like the GX and LX models. Most of its competition is smaller in dimension and interior space, giving the TX a decided edge when it comes to seating more than four or five.
The Acura MDX is a sporty, well-formed crossover with a strong road presence and a lot of appeal. It’s smaller than the TX, however, and has a much more cramped third row.
The Grand Cherokee is very truck-like in its feel when compared to the TX. With an off-road emphasis and larger overall size, the Grand Cherokee is nonetheless very luxurious. It’s also more expensive.
The XC90 is the most competitive option against the TX. While not quite as large, the Volvo has a very roomy interior for its size and an adult-usable third row–something the other two on this list cannot boast. The Lexus is more fuel efficient, however, and is more Americanized in its luxury than the more Euro-centric Volvo.
Pricing for the Lexus TX 350 starts at about $55,000, before delivery, but most buyers are going to be looking at closer to $60,000 to get the accouterments desired.
The table below shows the most common trim levels and how much they will run you.
The 2024 Lexus TX is a brand new model introduced for this model year. It’s completely new and based on the Toyota Grand Highlander model introduced in 2023. Like the Grand Highlander, the TX boasts a longer wheelbase, bigger footprint, and more efficient drivetrain as its major selling points.
The Lexus TX has a lot of interior room and many technology points that make it appealing to today’s audience.
The TX 350 is one of three powertrains in the new Lexus model. The TX 350 has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that outputs 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission powers the front wheels with all-wheel drive as an option.
That setup is a good baseline for the Lexus TX, with enough power and responsiveness to give confidence in most driving situations. Fuel efficiency is good as well, when compared to other gasoline-powered options in this market. We like the way the TX 350 feels on the road in everyday driving.
The Lexus TX also has a hybrid model in the 500h and a plug-in hybrid model in the 550h+. Both of these offer more power output, thanks to their added electrification, and higher fuel efficiency. The hybrid model 500h is the F Sport rendition of the TX, adding sporty upgrades for suspension tuning and styling. The 550h+ is the most luxurious of the TX models and has 33 miles of all-electric driving range. It’s also the most expensive.
As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not published crash test results for the Lexus TX. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, however, has done so and has given the TX good marks for safety.
The Toyota Grand Highlander upon which the TX is based has received good scores for crash tests as well. Because of this and the initial IIHS reports, we think the Lexus TX is better than average for safety.
Because it’s a brand new model, there aren’t many metrics to run with on reliability for the Lexus TX. The TX 350 has an all-new powertrain that hasn’t been used in very many models in the Toyota/Lexus lineup yet.
Toyota and Lexus, however, are top ranking brands for reliability expectation and we believe this will pan out with the TX. So we expect it to be more reliable than average.
For most shoppers in the larger, luxury midsize sport utility market, the baseline Lexus TX 350 is a great value. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid models offer more efficiency, but at a higher price. The hybrid in particular, while a relatively low-cost upgrade, changes many of the TX’s on-road dynamics with its larger wheels and sport-centric tuning. These changes may not appeal to comfort-conscious buyers.
Packages for the 2024 TX 350 include a useful Convenience package, which adds a smartphone digital key and some upgraded driver assist systems to improve safety. The Technology package adds a larger digital instrument display, a useful digital rearview mirror (uses a camera instead of a reflection, eliminating the “tunnel”), surround-view cameras, and a semi-automated parking system. These two packages are great additions to the TX.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 comes with a slightly better than average warranty for its segment. Additions such as wheel alignment coverage, included maintenance, etc. are boons.
