  • Pros

  • The “Hyundai Group Triplets” are probably our favorite EVs these days, and the ones we recommend most to friends and customers. There are three vehicles built on the same basic platform: The Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, and the Genesis GV60. While the Genesis goes upscale, the Kia and Hyundai are solid, practical, mid-market mechanical twins, with very different exterior styles. The Hyundai is the more conventional looking, while the Kia goes a bit Avant Bumper Gard. We like these vehicles a lot. They all offer a great balance of range, style, comfort, size, and versatility.
  • GT’d. In addition to the standard EV6, Kia is offering this GT, high-performance version. Instead of the mere 320 hp in the standard, all-wheel-drive EV6, you get 576 hp, larger wheels and tires, some visual slap ons, and 50 miles less range. So it’s sort of the EV for the Mustang GT buyer — willing to suffer a bit to win a “mine is faster than yours” argument.
  • Packaging. The practical appeal of the EV6 remains the same. The EV6 is a reasonable size on the outside, bigger than you would think on the inside, well suited to four passengers and a modest amount of stuff, and features fast charging abilities. The EV6 is maneuverable, relatively quiet, and pretty comfortable.
  • Cons

  • We don’t dislike the EV6 GT. We simply like the regular EV6 much better. Without the GT’s oversized wheels and low profile tires, the regular EV6 is quieter. With “only” 320hp, in the AWD version, the regular EV6 gets an additional 50 miles of range (even more with single motor versions). Without the GT's lower profile tires and handling tweaks, the regular EV6 is more comfortable. And the regular EV6, with its batteries and center of gravity in the floor, already handles well and is fun to drive.
  • Because we can? We can’t help feel that Kia wanted to demonstrate that they could build a higher performance version of their EV6. Point taken, Kia. But unless you are an absolute speed freak or feel inadequate in other areas of your life, we’d strongly steer you to the regular EV6, which is more comfortable, quieter, cheaper, and has more range.
