Car Donation FAQs

Does NPR take car donations?

Yes, NPR stations take car donations through this program. You've come to the right place! This is the NPR car donation program started by the folks at one of NPR's most beloved and trusted programs, Car Talk. Listeners simply fill out an online form, schedule a pick up, and the proceeds from the sale of your old car go to your favorite NPR station.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to take a tax deduction for your donation. But most importantly, you'll give a trusty or unwanted vehicle a second life as great NPR reporting, thoughtful NPR interviews, and open-minded NPR explorations of important topics. A car donation is great for you, great for your NPR station.

What types of vehicles can be donated?

All kinds of vehicles can be donated to NPR stations. We accept cars, trucks, boats, planes, motorcycles, RVs, and heavy farm machinery, running or not. Just nothing by Fisher Price, please! No smog certificate or inspection is necessary. We pick up car donations for NPR stations anywhere in the country, with very few exceptions. We can even help you replace your lost title, if necessary.

How do I donate a vehicle that doesn't run?

You can even donate a vehicle that doesn't run to your NPR station. Don't worry! As long as we know it's a non-running vehicle, we'll send the appropriate tow truck to haul it away. Even non-running vehicles can be donated to help NPR and its stations.

How do I start the car donation process?

You start the NPR station car donation process by filling out the online donation form (link) or call us at 1-877-215-0227. Our donation specialists will get the process started right away, and get your car donation to your NPR station underway.

How much money from my vehicle donation goes to my local NPR station?

We're very proud that our program returns the largest percentage of gross proceeds from donated cars to NPR stations. We are all public radio employees and fans here. We are doing this because we love your NPR station as much as you do. There are costs and fees that have to be paid by us during the car donation process, and we work to keep them as low as possible. We have to pay for car pickup or towing, title transfer, auction or dismantling fees, and other costs associated with turning your car into a cash donation for your station. But when all is said and done, we always deliver at least 70% of the gross proceeds to the station, a number that makes your NPR station very happy.

What information is needed for the vehicle donation process?

We'll let you know exactly what information you need to donate your car to your favorite NPR station. All you need to start is your contact information and some basic information on the vehicle being donated. You'll use that to fill out the online form (link) to get started.

Later, you'll need to rifle through your kitchen drawer and find your vehicle's title. If you've lost your title, don't worry! Just call our vehicle donation specialists at 1-877-215-0227. They're great at solving these types of problems for NPR car donors, and will be happy to help.

Will I receive a tax deduction when I donate a car to my local NPR station?

You may be eligible for a tax deduction when you donate your car to your local NPR station. You will receive a donation receipt, and you are entitled to deduct the sale price of the vehicle if it sells for more than $500. If it sells for less than $500, you may deduct the fair market value of the car, not to exceed $500. We recommend you consult a site like kbb.com if you need help estimating the fair market value of a sub-$500 donation for tax purposes.

Once your NPR-station car donation is complete, we'll provide you with a sales receipt or IRS Form 1098C. We are not able to provide specific tax advice as each individual tax situation is different. We suggest you consult your tax advisor for more info.
