Donate a Car in South Dakota

Do you live in the state of South Dakota and have an used or unwanted car just sitting in your driveway? Be the difference and help support your local radio station by donating your vehicle through the Car Talk Car Donation Program. A car donation will support your local South Dakota public radio station and help keep your favorite radio programs running.

How do I donate my car in South Dakota?

Follow these easy steps to donate a car to your NPR station:

  1. Be sure you have a clear title.
  2. Complete the donation form online or over the phone at 1-877-215-0227.
  3. Provide us with some information about your car, including the year, make, model, mileage, and condition.
  4. A towing agent will contact you to schedule a pick up time most convenient for you. At the time of pick up, you'll hand over the keys and signed title to the tow driver.

After your car is sold, you'll be emailed a tax receipt. It's that easy!

Note: If your vehicle is missing its title, you can obtain a duplicate from the South Dakota Department of Revenue. You can download the form at the South Dakota DOR website.

When will I receive a tax receipt?

Within 30 days of your car being sold, you'll be emailed a tax receipt. If your car sold for over $500, you can claim a tax deduction equal to the full sale price. If it sold for less than $500, you can claim the fair market value up to $499. Please consult with your tax advisor on how to properly claim your car donation tax deduction.

Can I donate a car that doesn't run?

Yes! We accept running and non-running vehicles. We do ask that your car have at least two inflated tires and be in a tow-accessible location, such as a driveway or on a street. The tow truck cannot reach cars that are in a garage.
